6 Things with Sera Michael Founder of BY SERA

Based in New York City, Sera Michael is the founder of BY SERA, a creative brand-building consultancy offering PR and communications, events and partnerships, and influencer marketing for thoughtful brands and visionary founders in the fashion, beauty and lifestyle space.

1. What started it all for you?

I’ve always loved creative brand-building and helping interesting people and companies tell their stories. I’ve worked in the world of PR and brand marketing for over 10 years, but last summer I took a leap and started my own business after making a cross-country move to NYC.

I’m entrepreneurial at heart and love having the opportunity to work on so many different projects as a consultant and create my own playbook when it comes to the way I work.

As a marketer, I’m passionate about emerging brands and creative entrepreneurs and love spending my days strategizing the most effective ways to reach their audiences, tell their stories, and help them grow. It’s important to me that I work with like-minded brands that are also focused on doing better and making a difference.

2. What drives your creative spark?

I get super excited about creative ways to bring brands to life, and living in NYC I’m surrounded by never-ending inspiration. I get inspired by people doing things differently and really disrupting industries as a result. I love a great founder story and usually start my days on a walk with a good podcast and a cup of green tea to get me motivated and spark inspiration.

3. Most treasured home decor item?

I love sourcing home decor secondhand and always discover so many great finds on places like FB Marketplace. When I moved to NYC, I sold all of my furniture and started from scratch, sourcing much of what’s in my current apartment from resale marketplaces. I scored a set of amazing vintage glass coffee tables after negotiating the price for months and it was well with the wait – they’re currently one of my favorite pieces in our home.

4. What’s the best advice you've ever received?

Work hard and be nice! It’s a really small world and your network is everything.

5. It's 5 o'clock at home. What would you be pouring?

I’ve recently started enjoying negronis because my husband often makes them after the workday or to kick off the weekend – they’ve become a fun celebratory drink in our home and something I rarely order out. I also love a nonalcoholic beverage like Ghia or sparkling water with lemon, so simple but so refreshing in the summer!
