6 THINGS WITH MADDY PEASE

6 Things with Maddy Pease Graphic Designer, Art Director and Photographer

Based in Los Angeles, Maddy Pease is a creative and true multi-hyphenate. She's a Graphic Designer, Art Director, and Photographer. Making art in different forms has allowed to her to create a career where she feels energized to work. With a focus on photography, branding, and editorial design, Maddy has worked with an incredible list of brands including Paris Hilton, Ace Hotel, Jeffrey Campbell, and Eberjey to name a few. It doesn’t stop there either. Maddy pours her creativity into her side business Cherry Pickings, hand-picked collections of timeless vintage. Whatever project Maddy sets her mind to, she pours her whole heart into it. My guess is there's more coming from this creative force.

1. What started it all for you?

I always knew I was going to be a creative – it’s not something I ever had questions about or had to figure out. Becoming a graphic designer on the other hand, just kind of fell into my lap. When I was applying to college and trying to figure out how to turn “making art” into a career it was either the fine art world, which is super saturated or the design world. The graphic design world is relatively new in the grand scheme of things, and this was attractive to me. I got in and later ended up going to UCLA’s Design and Media Arts program. There, we learned everything from VR, typography, bookmaking, photography, the list goes on and on. My point is that it allowed us to try a lot of things and figure out what our “niche” was. Mine was photography and editorial design. The combination of these two things is what excites me the most, and where I get to do these today is with brands through the creation of Brand Identities.

2. What drives your creative spark?

Being creative is exhausting and sometimes it’s really hard to turn out good work consistently. I am a firm believer in regular breaks, walks, and moments of peace to reset that part of my brain. When I feel most creative is right after a big trip to a new place or after a long weekend. I am constantly feigning for that feeling every creative gets right before they produce great work, it’s infectious and energetic and addicting.

3. Most treasured home decor item?

Right now it’s my white boucle togo style couch that I got from Kardiel – my first “adult” purchase and it means a lot to me. I sit on it everyday while I work from home and honestly am very careful with who and what I let touch it!

4. What’s the best advice you've ever received?

Know your worth – it can be scary to charge what others charge and ask for fair compensation, but 10/10 times it’s worth it. Speak up for yourself and don’t let people walk all over you – unfortunately too common in the creative industry.

5. It's 5 o'clock at home. What would you be pouring?

Lately, it’s been a crisp, ice-cold coconut water from Harmless Harvest - although if it’s a special occasion I’ll do a homemade Negroni.
