6 THINGS WITH ANNA BUCKMAN

6 Things with Anna Buckman Lifestyle Writer at The Zoe Report

Based in Kentucky, Anna Buckman is a Lifestyle Writer at The Zoe Report, where she writes about all things related to home decor, travel, and entertaining. Her stories focus on interior design, entertaining, and travel, all of which she's passionate about and loves covering. Anna was previously the Shopping News Editor at TZR, and before that, she was as an editor at College Fashionista helping students learn the ins and outs of the media industry.

1. What started it all for you?

I originally got started writing about fashion and lifestyle in college, when I stumbled across a virtual internship program called College Fashionista, for which I photographed street style on campus and wrote about what people were wearing. After graduation, I ended up moving to NYC and working for CF immediately. It was there that I really delved into the editorial world and starting learning the ropes from some amazing people. After a few years, I started to feel ready for a bigger role, and I came across a shopping news editor job at The Zoe Report. As you could guess, the rest is history!  Though I've switched jobs (and moved across the country to work remotely) since, I'm still writing for the publication.

2. What drives your creative spark?

Fortunately, I'm obsessed with the topics I cover. They're things that I'm passionate about when I'm not working. So, I'm constantly exploring each field, whether that's poring over the work of interior designers I love, researching entertaining tips to throw a great party, or traveling the country and the world to discover new places.

3. Most treasured home decor item?

Oh my gosh, how could I ever pick! To be honest, I'd have to say just all of my artwork. I've spent 10-plus years digging through flea markets, antique shops, houses of family members, and the internet at large trying to find pieces I love. Now when I look around my house at my full, very eclectic walls, I smile to myself every day. Not only because it's beautiful, but because I know how much work and joy went into finding all of those items.

4. What’s the best advice you've ever received?

I feel like the best advice I received (and something I've just learned along the way) is to take care of yourself and take time for you. That's been especially relevant during the pandemic. For a long time, I never took any time off and didn't really take care of my mind and my body, and it started to end in breakdowns where I just couldn't work at all, much less be truly creative. But I've had great bosses over the years remind me of the importance of self-care, and it's come to be something I really prioritize. It's helped me so much in becoming a better writer, creator, and even employee in general.

5. It's 5 o'clock at home. What would you be pouring?

I'm a Kentucky girl, so I'm often drinking something with bourbon! Lately, I've been loving whiskey sours, which just includes bourbon (preferably Woodford Reserve, my favorite!), lemon juice, simple syrup, and a maraschino cherry (or two).

6. What are your favorite 6 accounts that you follow for inspiration?

@louiseroehome- Louise Roe's home account is such a joy to follow. She posts photos of her own home renovation updates in London, as well as inspiration from accounts she loves. Her feed is always so colorful and fun.
@geosaumarezsmith- This architect has the most beautiful home — I'm always stealing ideas from his busy, eclectic account.
@robertkime- Ugh, is there anything not to love about Robert Kime? He's such an expert at mixing prints and colors. I think I have every one of his Instagram photos saved.
@james_coviello- James Coviello's house is truly a dream. He's decorated his Hudson Valley space to perfection. I'm always in awe of his paint color choices and the way he pairs pieces together.
@tradchap- Do you see a theme here? I love following people with old houses and/or old souls. The way this antiques dealer has transformed his home is incredible — he's an expert at adding character and timeless style.
@hillhousevintage- I mean, who doesn't love following Paula Sutton of Hill House Vintage? Her page is always a burst of happiness and color on my feed. I live vicariously through her as she spends her days in the English countryside.
