The Role of Objects in Interior Design

A well-designed interior is shaped by more than its architecture, furniture, and finishes. The objects within a space contribute another layer, introducing sculptural forms, tactile surfaces, and points of visual interest that give a room its character.

For interior designers, sourcing these pieces is an opportunity to refine a project and bring its vision into focus.
For collectors, it is a way to discover work that resonates beyond a single room.

In both cases, the process begins with looking beyond decoration and considering the artistic perspective, material, and form of an object.

Know What You’re Looking For

Before sourcing begins, consider what the space needs. An object can introduce contrast, complement an existing material palette, or create a focal point within a quieter composition. Defining its intended role helps narrow the search without limiting creative possibilities.

Form and Scale. Consider a piece’s silhouette and proportions in relation to its surroundings.

Material and Texture. Use tactile surfaces to introduce contrast or complement existing materials.

Color and Composition. Create visual definition through contrast, tonal variation, or subtle shifts in color.

Artistic Perspective. Look for the artist’s distinct approach and what sets the work apart from conventional accessories.

Where to Source Artful Objects

A thoughtful sourcing process draws from different places. Artist studios and galleries offer opportunities to discover individual practices and works, while collectible design platforms bring together pieces from multiple artists within a considered selection.

Design fairs, independent makers, and vintage sources can also broaden the search.

Explore our Artful Objects collection to discover pieces across different forms, finishes, and scales, or browse individual artist collections to learn more about the work represented.

Once a Piece Speaks to You

Consider how the object will live within the space. Its relationship to surrounding furniture, natural light, and materials can determine whether it blends into the composition or becomes a focal point.

Look at scale, light, and surrounding materials to find a placement that feels intentional.

Give It Room to Breathe! Experiment with groupings of different heights, shapes, and textures to create visual interest, but remember that not every object needs a companion. Sometimes, letting a sculptural piece stand alone is what allows its form to shine.

Building a More Personal Collection

The best interiors aren’t filled all at once. They take shape through thoughtful choices, unexpected discoveries, and objects that speak to you for reasons beyond their appearance. A striking silhouette, a distinctive texture, or an artist’s point of view can be what makes a piece feel right.

For designers, these objects bring depth and character to a space. For collectors, they can mark the beginning of a lasting connection with an artist’s work. Together, they make a room feel less like a finished arrangement and more like a story that continues to unfold.

Explore the INK + PORCELAIN Stories for more perspectives on artists, interiors, and the role of sculptural objects in considered spaces.

We hope you feel inspired to look beyond the expected, discover pieces that speak to you, and create spaces that tell a story—one artful object at a time!
